Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about our products? We’ve got the answers to all of the most frequently asked questions about our product range including what makes our products different and how they can be installed.

General Speed Hump Questions

Our products are made for the harsh Australian climate. Developed and designed in Australia, we focus on three core products – speed humps, wheel stops and rumble bars.  Our patented design and production process is unique and eliminates colour fade over time as the yellow colour is moulded-in, not painted-on. Our speed humps do not fade, rot, corrode or crack.

Just as there is a difference between low and high quality tyres, rubber speed humps are much the same. We use high quality rubber which makes our speed humps the crème of the crop. Suitable for commercial use in car parks, drive thrus, car washes, high traffic areas and pretty much anywhere you wish to slow traffic.

Choosing the right speed hump depends on factors such as the type of traffic, the desired speed reduction, and the specific environment. For residential areas, our standard rubber speed humps are effective and easy to install. For commercial or industrial settings, you might consider our modular speed humps for durability and flexibility. Our team is happy to provide recommendations based on your specific needs.

Our speed humps and rumble bars are made from high-quality materials such as rubber, polyurethane, and recycled plastics, ensuring long-lasting performance. These materials are chosen for their durability, resistance to weather, and ability to withstand heavy traffic loads. Depending on the product, our speed humps can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years or more with proper maintenance.

Yes, our speed humps and rumble bars are designed for installation in various weather conditions. However, for optimal installation, we recommend avoiding extremely wet conditions as this may affect the adhesion of certain products. Our installation guide provides detailed instructions to ensure the proper placement and longevity of your speed control products.

Rumble bars are an excellent choice for drive-thru lanes as they help control vehicle speed, reduce the risk of accidents, and improve customer safety. The tactile feedback provided by rumble bars alerts drivers to reduce speed without being overly intrusive. Our YELLOW 300MM Rumble Bar is particularly effective in these environments due to its visibility and ease of installation.

Speed humps are specifically designed to slow down vehicles, encouraging safer driving speeds in areas where pedestrian and vehicle interactions occur. By reducing speed, speed humps decrease the likelihood of accidents and improve overall safety for pedestrians and drivers alike. The height, width, and spacing of the speed humps determine the extent of speed reduction.

The lifespan of our products varies depending on factors such as traffic volume, weather conditions, and maintenance. On average, our speed humps can last between 5 to 10 years, while our rumble bars have a similar lifespan. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and periodic inspections, can help extend the life of these products.

Maintaining and cleaning your speed humps and rumble bars is simple. Regularly inspect them for signs of wear or damage. Clean the surface using a mild detergent and water to remove dirt, oil, or other debris that may accumulate over time. If you notice any damage or loosening, contact us for repair or replacement options.

Suggested Spacing:

  • Rumble Bars or Kerb Protectors:
    • Spacing: Typically, rumble bars or kerb protectors should be spaced at intervals of 500mm to 1 meter apart, depending on the level of protection required and the width of the vehicle path. Closer spacing provides more consistent protection, while wider spacing may suffice in less critical areas.
    • Placement: Position the kerb protectors along the edge of the drive-thru lane, particularly at turns or areas where vehicles are most likely to encroach on the kerb. It’s also advisable to place them at the entry and exit points of the drive-thru to guide vehicles effectively.

Fixings for Concrete:

  • Yes, our kerb protection products typically come with appropriate fixings for concrete surfaces. These fixings are usually included with the product and are specifically designed for secure installation on concrete, ensuring that the kerb protectors remain firmly in place even under heavy traffic.
  • Type of Fixings: The fixings generally include heavy-duty bolts and anchors, which are designed to withstand the pressure and impact from vehicles. In some cases, adhesive options might also be available for additional security.

Installation Recommendations:

  • Pre-drilling: It’s important to pre-drill the concrete to the correct depth for the anchors. This ensures a snug fit and maximum holding power.
  • Leveling: Ensure that the kerb protectors are level and aligned correctly before securing them in place. This will not only improve their effectiveness but also enhance the overall appearance of the installation.
  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect the fixings to ensure they remain secure, especially in high-traffic areas where wear and tear might occur more quickly.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that the drive-thru kerb protection is both effective and long-lasting. If you have specific needs or require assistance with installation, our team is available to provide further support.

In residential areas on the Sunshine Coast, or generally in Queensland, parking rules are governed by both local council regulations and state road rules. Here are the general guidelines for parking near the gutter or side of the road:

General Parking Guidelines:

  1. Parallel Parking:
    • When parallel parking on the side of the road, your car should be as close as possible to the kerb or gutter without causing obstruction.
    • The Queensland Road Rules typically require that the vehicle be no more than 50cm (half a metre) from the kerb or edge of the road.
  2. Direction:
    • Vehicles should be parked in the direction of traffic, not against it.
  3. Driveways and Intersections:
    • Ensure your car is not blocking driveways or too close to intersections. Typically, you must not park within 10 metres of an intersection without traffic lights or within 20 metres if traffic lights are present.
  4. No Stopping Zones:
    • Be aware of any signs indicating no stopping zones, which could be in place to maintain clear sight lines for drivers or to ensure access for emergency vehicles.

Local Council Regulations:

  • The Sunshine Coast Council may have specific local rules regarding parking in residential areas, including any restricted parking zones, time limits, or permits required for parking in certain areas.

Securing rumble bars to asphalt pavements involves a specific installation process to ensure they remain firmly in place and provide the intended traffic-calming effect. Here’s a general overview of the steps involved:

1. Preparation:

  • Surface Cleaning: Begin by cleaning the area where the rumble bars will be installed. Remove any debris, dirt, or loose material from the asphalt surface to ensure proper adhesion and installation.
  • Marking: Use chalk or spray paint to mark the exact location where each rumble bar will be placed. Ensure they are aligned correctly and at the appropriate spacing.

2. Drilling:

  • Drill Holes: Use a hammer drill with a masonry bit to drill holes through the pre-drilled holes in the rumble bars and into the asphalt. The holes should be deep enough to accommodate the length of the bolts or anchors that will be used.
  • Depth and Diameter: Ensure the drilled holes match the diameter and depth of the fixing hardware specified for the rumble bars.

3. Anchoring:

  • Insert Anchors: Depending on the design of the rumble bars, you might use concrete anchors, bolts, or specialized asphalt anchors. Insert these into the drilled holes.
  • Bolt Down: Place the rumble bar over the drilled holes, align it properly, and then bolt it down securely using the anchors. Ensure that each bolt is tightened firmly to prevent any movement of the rumble bar.

4. Sealant (Optional):

  • Apply Sealant: In some cases, a sealant or adhesive may be applied around the edges of the rumble bar or in the bolt holes to provide additional security and weather resistance. This can help prevent water from seeping into the asphalt, which could cause damage over time.

5. Final Check:

  • Inspect: After installation, inspect the rumble bars to ensure they are level, secure, and aligned correctly. Make any necessary adjustments.
  • Test: It’s advisable to test the installation by allowing a vehicle to drive over the rumble bars to ensure they are functioning correctly and remain securely in place.

Materials Required:

  • Rumble bars with pre-drilled holes
  • Hammer drill with a masonry bit
  • Concrete or asphalt anchors/bolts
  • Sealant (optional)
  • Wrench or socket set for tightening bolts

This process should provide a durable and effective installation of rumble bars on asphalt pavements. If you need further details or assistance with specific products or tools, feel free to ask!

It’s common for speed bumps to generate noise, especially when vehicles pass over them at higher speeds. However, there are some options and considerations that can help reduce the noise generated by speed bumps in residential areas like your apartment complex:

1. Rubber Speed Humps:

  • Material: Rubber speed humps are often quieter than traditional concrete or metal speed bumps. The rubber material absorbs some of the impact and reduces the noise level as vehicles drive over them.
  • Design: Some rubber speed humps are specifically designed with noise reduction in mind. They may have a lower profile or different surface textures that minimize noise while still effectively slowing down traffic.

2. Speed Cushions:

  • Description: Speed cushions are similar to speed humps but are designed to allow larger vehicles (such as emergency vehicles) to pass over them with less impact. This design can reduce the overall noise level, especially if the speed cushions are spaced to allow regular car wheels to pass between them without directly hitting the bump.
  • Benefits: These are effective for slowing down traffic while being less disruptive in terms of noise.

3. Maintenance and Positioning:

  • Regular Maintenance: Ensuring that the speed humps are in good condition (without cracks, loose parts, or other damage) can also reduce noise.
  • Strategic Positioning: Placing speed humps away from residential units or ensuring they are not directly in front of entrances or exits can help reduce the noise heard inside homes.

4. Traffic Calming Alternatives:

  • Alternative Measures: Depending on the layout of your complex, other traffic calming measures like road narrowing, chicanes, or even speed limit signage might be effective without introducing noise.

Next Steps:

  • Consult with Your Management: I would recommend discussing these options with your apartment complex management or homeowners’ association. They might be able to explore quieter alternatives or adjust the existing speed bumps to reduce noise.
  • Professional Assessment: It might also be beneficial to have a traffic management professional assess the situation and suggest the best solution for your specific environment.

By considering these options, it’s possible to maintain traffic safety while also reducing the noise impact on residents. If you need more information or have further questions, feel free to ask!

Yes, you can install a speed hump on a private street in Australia, but there are a few important considerations and guidelines you should be aware of:

1. Property Ownership and Permissions:

  • Ownership: Since the street is private, you typically have more flexibility in making modifications like installing speed humps. However, it’s important to confirm that you or your community association has the legal right to make such changes.
  • Permissions: If the private street is part of a shared property, such as within a townhouse complex or a gated community, you’ll likely need to obtain permission from all relevant stakeholders, such as other property owners or the body corporate.

2. Compliance with Local Regulations:

  • Local Council Guidelines: Although it’s a private street, some local councils may have specific guidelines or requirements for installing traffic calming measures like speed humps. It’s advisable to check with your local council to ensure compliance, even on private property.
  • Safety Standards: Ensure that the speed hump meets Australian safety standards, such as AS 2890.1 (Parking facilities) and AS 1742.13 (Manual of uniform traffic control devices). These standards dictate design and installation practices to ensure the safety of both vehicles and pedestrians.

3. Installation Considerations:

  • Location: Place the speed hump in a location that effectively reduces speed while minimizing any negative impact on vehicles. Common locations include near pedestrian crossings, sharp bends, or areas where speeding is a concern.
  • Visibility: Ensure that the speed hump is highly visible, especially at night. Use appropriate signage and markings, such as reflective paint, to alert drivers of the upcoming speed hump.
  • Dimensions: Choose a speed hump with dimensions that suit the specific needs of the street. The height, width, and length should be appropriate to slow down vehicles without causing discomfort or damage.

4. Professional Installation:

  • Installation Process: While you can install a speed hump yourself if you have the necessary tools and expertise, it’s often advisable to hire professionals. They can ensure that the installation is done correctly, adhering to all safety standards and best practices.
  • Fixing to Surface: Speed humps can be securely fixed to various surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, and brick paving. Make sure the correct fixings are used to avoid any movement or damage over time.

5. Maintenance:

  • Regular Inspections: After installation, regularly inspect the speed hump for wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas. Ensure that the fixings remain secure and that the hump maintains its structural integrity.
  • Cleaning and Repairs: Keep the speed hump clean and free of debris. If any damage occurs, it should be repaired promptly to maintain effectiveness and safety.

By considering these factors, you can safely and effectively install a speed hump on a private street, enhancing safety and reducing vehicle speeds as needed.

In Australia, the rules regarding the registration of mobility scooters vary by state and territory. Generally, mobility scooters do not need to be registered if they are only used on private property, such as village roads within a retirement village or gated community. However, here are some key points to consider:

General Guidelines:

  1. Private Property Use:
    • If you are using a mobility scooter solely on private roads or within the confines of a retirement village, registration is typically not required.
  2. Public Roads:
    • If you intend to use the mobility scooter on public roads or footpaths, the rules can differ. In most states, mobility scooters are considered pedestrian devices, meaning they do not need to be registered as long as they comply with certain conditions (e.g., speed limits, safety features).
  3. Speed Limits:
    • Mobility scooters are usually allowed on public footpaths and roads if they do not exceed a speed of 10 km/h.
  4. State-Specific Regulations:
    • Queensland: No registration is required for mobility scooters used on public roads or footpaths as long as they are compliant with the speed limit and other safety requirements.
    • New South Wales (NSW): Similar rules apply, where no registration is needed if the device is primarily used for personal mobility and complies with speed and design standards.
    • Victoria: Again, registration is not required, but users must follow road rules as pedestrians.
  5. Insurance and Safety:
    • While registration may not be required, it’s a good idea to consider insurance for your mobility scooter, especially if you are using it in shared spaces or public areas. Additionally, ensuring that your scooter is well-maintained and equipped with appropriate safety features (e.g., lights, reflectors) is important.

If your mobility scooter is only being used on village roads within a private property or retirement village, registration is generally not required. However, if you have any concerns or are considering using it on public roads, it’s wise to check with your local transport authority or council for the specific regulations that apply in your area.

Surface Suitability for Rumble Bars:

Rumble bars are quite versatile and can generally be installed on various types of sealed road surfaces. Here’s a breakdown of the surfaces they can be screwed onto:

  • Smooth Asphalt: Rumble bars are ideally suited for installation on smooth asphalt surfaces, providing a secure fit and optimal performance.
  • Concrete: Rumble bars can also be installed on concrete surfaces. Special care should be taken during installation to ensure the fixings are properly secured.
  • Chip Seal or Coarse Surfaces: While rumble bars can be installed on chip seal or other coarse surfaces, the installation may require additional considerations. Uneven surfaces might need to be leveled slightly or prepped to ensure that the rumble bars are secured firmly and evenly.
  • Brick Paving: Rumble bars can be installed on brick-paved surfaces, but similar to coarse surfaces, proper preparation is necessary to ensure the fixings hold securely.

Fixings for Rumble Bars:

  • Included Fixings: Yes, rumble bars typically come with the necessary fixings included. These fixings are designed to suit the specific surface they will be installed on, ensuring a secure and durable installation.
  • Surface-Specific Fixings: The fixings included are generally suitable for most standard surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete. However, if you have a particularly unusual or challenging surface, it might be worth discussing your needs with the supplier to ensure the fixings provided will be effective.
  • Separate Ordering: If additional or specialized fixings are required, they can be ordered separately. This might be necessary for surfaces that are particularly challenging or if you need extra fixings for additional security.

Installation Recommendations:

  • Pre-drilling: For concrete or very hard surfaces, pre-drilling holes for the fixings is recommended to ensure a secure and flush installation.
  • Surface Preparation: Ensure that the surface is clean and free of debris before installation. For uneven or coarse surfaces, some leveling or smoothing might be required to ensure the rumble bars sit flat and secure.

By following these guidelines, you can confidently install rumble bars on a variety of sealed road surfaces, ensuring they perform effectively for traffic control and safety purposes. If you have a specific surface in mind, it’s always a good idea to consult with the supplier to confirm the best approach for installation.

In my experience, Speed Humps are usually installed about 10M or approximately 2 car lengths from the Speed Humps.

This allows the Speed Hump to slow the vehicle before arriving at the pedestrian crossing and provides the pedestrians sufficient visibility to see approaching vehicles.

This also depends on individual circumstances such as line of site, corners, intersections and parking areas.

However, this is a good rule of thumb.

I hope this is helpful and should I be able to assist further in any way please be sure to let me know.

There are different requirements between different local council controlled rads, federally controlled roads and private roads.

The installation of Speed Humps within a private property gated community comes down to the decision of the body corporate and the issue of safety for the residents within the complex.

Look at the article below:

Speed humps are an effective way to reduce vehicle speeds, but noise is definitely an important factor to consider, especially in residential areas close to the street.

Here’s some information that might help with your decision:

Noise Levels for Speed Humps at 15-20 KPH

Average Noise Impact:

Vehicles typically generate more noise when they decelerate and accelerate over speed humps. This includes engine noise, tyre contact, and suspension impact.

At speeds of 15-20 KPH, the noise levels from passenger vehicles can range between 60 to 75 decibels (dB). For context, normal conversation is around 60 dB, while typical road traffic is about 70-85 dB.

Factors Influencing Noise:

Type of Vehicle: Heavier vehicles, like trucks or delivery vans, will create more noise compared to standard cars.

Speed of Approach: Vehicles that do not slow down sufficiently before the speed hump will create louder noise upon impact.

Speed Hump Material: Rubber humps are quieter compared to concrete ones due to their flexibility and ability to absorb some impact.

Distance to Residence: Given that your houses are only about 250 mm from the roadside, even slight increases in noise may be noticeable.

Signage and Alternative Solutions:

A 20 KPH speed limit sign can indeed help reduce speeds without adding noise from physical measures like speed humps. However, once people are aware that there are no speed humps they tend to ignore signage.

Another option is to use radar speed displays, which show drivers their current speed, encouraging them to slow down without noise impact, the same issue over time. There needs to be a physical reminder to slow down.

Noise Testing:

If noise is a major concern, you might propose installing one speed hump as a trial and measure noise levels at different times of the day. There are simple decibel meter apps available to get a basic idea of noise levels before making a final decision.

I hope this information is helpful.

In our experience of over 20 years, any speed reduction method will only be effective for a short period of time unless it is accompanied by a physical render to reduce speed. This also reminds people to be more aware of their surroundings.

Let me know if I an assist further in any way.
